About Leatherman: Time-Tested Tools On a low-budget trip through Europe in 1975, recent college graduate Tim Leatherman faced a number of impromptu "fix-it" situations that his traditional pocket knife couldn't help with. Over the next eight years, Tim used his engineering background to produce countless designs and hundreds of prototypes for the tool he wished he'd had on that trip. In 1983, the original Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool hit the market. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one-million tools a year. Thanks to their durability and versatility, Leatherman products--which now include multi-pliers, knives, pruners, and LED lights--are a mainstay of tradesmen and women, sailors, fishermen, hunters, backpackers, scouts, and do-it-yourselfers the world over. What's in the Box Leatherman 831082 Freestyle CX Multi-tool.

The Freestyle CX is a great companion tool while you're fishing, biking, or camping. |

Great little tool August 11, 2010 Paul Krzywicki (Northern, NJ USA) I didn't buy this expecting the entire "suite" of options some Leatherman tools offer. I bought this to have a good knife and pliers handy with me at all times.
It's small, light, and does it's job. I don't even know it's on my belt throughout the day. It's not much bigger than the small cheap pocket knife I was using before.
Typical Leatherman quality. No play in any of the parts at all, and doesn't open unless you want it to.
Freestyle CX-- perfect pocket carry Leatherman August 6, 2010 D. Nathan Meehan (Houston TX) I own essentially all of the Leatherman tools and products from the largest to the smallest. I buy them whenever on sale and have given dozens of Leatherman Waves to men and boys as this i the icon of multi-tools. But it is too large and too heavy for routine pocket carry.
The smallest leatherman products cram scissors and scredrivers into a keychain attachment with knives jus too small to be useful and not a really reliable strength.
The CX combines a sufficiently beefy part of the tool I use most on the wave...the pliers/wire cutters and a working single liner lock blade. The pliers are nearly as good as the full size Wave and similar and the knife is fully acceptable. The blade curvature makes it difficult to hand sharpen (no problem for me as I use EdgePro system!) and it is a little on the thin size---so no lateral prying! The key is that the size and weight are fully acceptable for pocket carry.
Not too large, just the right tools. If you can get away with carrying a pouch on your belt carry the Wave. If you need something in your pocket, get the Freestyle CX
Great small tool June 26, 2010 jmo14 I have wanted something handy enough yet not cumbersome to always have in my pocket and this fits the bill perfectly. Quality construction, couldn't ask for more.
Great pocket knife with handy pliers. June 18, 2010 J. Sheehan (Knoxville, TN) While calling this little guy a multitool might be a stretch, I really like what it does provide. The blade is very sharp and is the perfect size for a wide range of uses. The one-handed opening and closing really does work as advertised. It is even kind of fun (I find myself opening and closing it while sitting at my desk as I think). The pliers are sturdy enough to actually be useful. While the tool is not exactly tiny, once it is clipped to my pocket I forget it is there. One thing I really like is the placement of the clip. At first it seemed odd having it off to one side, but one I clipped it onto my pocket for the first time I realized how smart the placement is. If the clip had been centered it would have to sit partly up the pocket in order for the knife to be flush with the edge. With this arrangement the clip is at the edge of the pocket with the knife extending inwards. This allows for a much more stable and unintrusive fit than if it was located in the center of the knife.
The only negative that I have found is that dirt can get up under the locking mechanism for the blade and is really hard to get out. The result is that when I press the bar to unlock the blade I feel and hear the dirt crunching. Not a big problem, but slightly annoying.
As long as you don't need screwdrivers, tweezers and toothpicks in your everyday carry knife I would recommend this tool.
Leatherman Freestyle CX is a must-have EDC May 31, 2010 Matthew Garcia (Santa Rosa, CA USA) The Leatherman Freestyle CX is a great EDC. It disappears in my jean's watch pocket or it rides in my pocket easily with the clip. The 154 CM blade is very sharp and the pliers are great for light to medium-duty jobs. I was able to use the pliers to pull out heavy staples sticking out of my couch and they worked perfectly.
The carbon fiber is drilled out to reduce weight and looks nice. I find the fit and finish of it nice as well, but not perfect. The DLC coating seems to scratch easily compared to my leatherman Skeletool CX (the same tool except with a carabiner and bit driver) from just sitting in my watch pocket alone. I dropped my skeletool CX numerous times on pavement and even though dents appear, the coating has yet to come off.The coatings should be the same for the Freestyle CX but I do not have another one to compare it to. Also, some of the rivets on the tool had sharp edges/burs but I was able to file them down so now they are smooth.
Overall, for the price it is worth it, considering you get a 154 CM blade and carbon fiber for a great price in this compact tool.
