| Customer Reviews: Only the best May 18, 2010 J. Marques (USA) Once the decision was made to look for a puppy to adopt, we decided we wanted to do things right and offer only the best. Of course, a huge part of this is the quality of food given to the puppy. So, I went to pet stores, talked to sales people, pet owners, and vet techs, getting their opinions and then began to look online. The hunt came down to Nutro and Blue Buffalo. While Nutro is of a reasonable quality and probably the most comparable food to Blue Buffalo in most stores, I saw review after review camplaining of digestive issues associated with the numerous recalls that Nutro has had. So, Blue Buffalo it is!
I'm so glad we decided to go with this brand. When we picked up our little Golden Shepherd mix from the shelter, she was 10 weeks old and had been fed unlimited amounts of Pedigree. While adorable, she could clearly benefit from better food. We tried to slowly ween her off her Pedigree food and mix in Blue Buffalo as recommended but she actually preferred to eat the Blue Buffalo around the Pedigree. So, we transitioned her a bit more quickly than recommended and she loved it. No more stool issues, her coat is soft and beautiful and her eyes twinkle. Maybe it's not all Blue Buffalo's doing but certainly such wonderful nutrition is helping. Her vet is even impressed with how pretty she is and how steadily and proportionally she is putting on weight. She started at 10 weeks, 11 lbs and now she is about 6 months old and a lean 43lbs and growing!
The only disappointment is there is only one large breed puppy flavor, though our puppy has never seemed to mind. She still gets excited at every meal time.
An Excellent Food February 10, 2010 Peekablue (Missouri, U.S.A.) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I started my Golden Retriever, who is now nearly 3 years old, on this Blue Buffalo Puppy food when I brought him home at 7 weeks old. Growing up, my family had always fed Purina or Science Diet to our dogs (also Golden Retrievers) and they had always been healthy but this was to be my first dog to raise on my own. I am a veterinary technician and am aware of all the health problems that Goldens can be prone to, inlcuding allergies. Corn and other fillers are often the cause of such allergies, so I wanted to avoid feeding them as much as possible.
I did research and read a lot of ingredient labels to find out which brands were best. It turned out that Blue Buffalo was the only such brand that was readily available in my area. The breeder had been feeding Eukanuba, so I started "Bruce" with a mixture of the Eukanuba and the Blue Buffalo. He actually seemed to prefer the Blue Buffalo over the Eukanuba, often picking out the E. and eating only the B.B. (One of my coworkers said that her Dachshund puppy did the same when she switched him to Blue Buffalo.) Since he wasn't eating the E., I went ahead and fed straight B.B. I noted that, at first, he would not eat the "Lifesource Bits" in the B.B. and picked them out, leaving them scattered on the floor. He soon grew out of that and is now a voracious eater.
Now, an adult dog, "Bruce" is on a sort of rotation diet. I started feeding exclusively the Blue Buffalo Large Breed formula but I later decided that to further decrease his chances of developing food allergies, I should be feeding a variety of foods. I then switched him to the Fish and Sweet Potato formula, followed by the Lamb, and so on. As each bag gets low, I buy a new bag and mix in a little of the new formula with the old to prevent digestive upset. This also provides better nutrition by giving him a variety of protein sources as opposed to just one. I don't think he prefers any formula over the others, he is not picky at all.
This food is a little expensive and I am on a modest income but I feel that feeding a high quality food is worth the cost and it may save money, in the long run, by keeping him healthy. I can happily report that "Bruce" has been very healthy, to date. His coat is thick and shiny, his eyes are clear, he is a solid 95 Lbs., and he is very intelligent. Everyone that sees him oohs and aahs over how handsome he is. I know that most of it is genetics but I'm sure that Blue Buffalo played a small part in it, too.
