3 out of 5 stars Good Mower... be mindful if it needs repaired.   August 23, 2010
scott stone (dallas, tx)
I've owned this mower for just under a year.

We live on an acre. The Swisher Z-Max cuts overall mow time by 20% versus my previous riding mower (due to zero turn radius and wider cut). It is also, dare I say, more entertaining to operate once you get the hang of it (very quick learning curve). It has plenty of power & speed to handle easily everything the typical home lawn can throw at it.

It is reasonably comfortable to use. The seat adjusts easily and there is lots of leg room due to the fact that the engine sits behind you. That said; I will add that the tension in the steering arms is set fairly high (e.g. especially when you push fwd to max speed). If my yard were much bigger my arms/back would definitely feel some fatigue. I haven't yet bothered to look if one can adjust the tension... which, of course, would render this comment moot.

Things have gone along without issue until a month ago... about the 25th hour of use (the engine has an hour meter). The mower kept popping a fuse. I called Swisher. They were quick to give me some names of authorized repair centers in my area. I called the first six on the list (closest to my house). The phone numbers were either out of service (two of the six) or were for businesses that did not work on Swisher mowers (four of six). Finally, on the seventh call -- having gone back to Swisher twice more for new numbers -- I found someone who worked on Swisher mowers (sort of! I'll get to that in a bit). They were located 46 miles from my house (e.g. two hundred mile trip to drop-off and pick-up). Not cool. However, this repair center offered a nice little service... drop the mower off at any Home Depot and they will pick it up from there ($35 fee unless still under warranty, in which case your $35 will be refunded). Cool. I can live with that.

This repair center was authorized to work on Swisher mowers but had never actually worked on one! To make a long story short, I've been without my mower for a month... though I've been promised it will be delivered tomorrow. The one-month-without-a-mower seems excessive (replaced the ignition switch). Some of the delay may be due to the fact that they had no history with Swisher (for parts, warranty process, etc.). Some probably has to do with the fact that Home Depot was the middle man, who lacked all sense of urgency (HD didn't care that I was hand mowing instead of riding in the 100+ degree heat of Dallas). None the less I haven't been too happy/impressed with the whole repair experience after only 25 hours of lawnmower use.

Here's my word of caution. We live in the Dallas Metroplex (6 Million people). It was a pain to find someone to work on my mower in the 9th largest urban area in the country. Before you pull the trigger on this (or other Swisher) mowers you might check and see what your repair options are. Though Swisher offers a nice two year warranty it doesn't do much good if you can't find a place to get it fixed. If you get comfortable that your repair options are reasonable I think you'll find that this is a good riding mower option.

1 out of 5 stars Swisher ZT2450A Zero Turn Mower   July 2, 2010
Art
I purchased a Swisher ZT2450A Zero Turn Mower on June 16, 2009 and simply loved it. It looks rugged and the engine runs great. It handles great and does a great job cutting your lawn in half the time of a tractor. The problem I had with it is the transformer on the engine was defective upon receiving it and the battery did not hold a charge. That part was covered under warrantee. I opted to repair it myself with the new part they shipped me. Just recently after 24 total hours of use the deck was squealing. I pulled it apart and found a failed China bearing. This unit is made in the USA. Called Swisher and it is not covered under warrantee. I ask what was covered and they couldn't answer me. Needless to say the closest dealer that repairs Swisher is over 60 miles away. I repaired it myself and now realize that the 2 year warrantee is a joke. In the future I will consider a local dealer's product over ordering online.

5 out of 5 stars Never going back to a lawn tractor....   June 26, 2010

Bought this to replace a Snapper 33" lawn tractor. With the snapper it took approx 4 hours to cut my 1 1/2 acre lot the ZT2450 takes just over an hour. I carried my hand held GPS and my max speed was 5.85 MPH. The Snapper used about 4 1/2 gallons to cut the entire lawn and the ZT2450 about 1.75 to 2.
I'd recommend you go over the machine and tighten all the bolts you can find. I was having battery problems and finally tracked it to a loose ground strap bolt.
Also recommend dropping the tire pressure to about 30% of the max. Improved both grip and the ride.
Be careful cutting across the face of a hill, the uphill driving wheel lightens up and makes control difficult.
I've been using my ZT2450 for 6 months now and am very happy with the performance and value for money.
