5 out of 5 stars with caution this type of appliance is very useful   August 19, 2010

I read reviews on so many here on Amazon, and saw how many warned about the heat of these appliances. At first I tried to set it up on a separate counter my husband had originally built for my bread machine, but it became apparent I needed a better spot for it and moved it to my regular 24 inch deep counter over my kitchen cabinets. I feel very safe using it now and found the sides are warm but not scorching hot, the top seems to only get extremely hot when you use it in broil mode. Naturally the glass door would get hot, would you touch your oven window on your range when it is turned on? I wouldn't. I had it only a short time and bought the:

Pop It in the Toaster Oven book:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0609807684/ref=oss_product

I bought this to get some idea on how to use the oven to do more than make toast and heat frozen foods.

The book is simple enough and I did find a few recipes that allowed me to get started.

I am glad I got it and ended up ordering another slide rack that I am waiting on.

I have done a casserole, the pecan cauliflower from the book, that my husband and I love and several other items already, I am happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very pleased   August 5, 2010

This is the best darn toaster oven we've ever had. It's roomy and versatile. It heats food incredibly evenly. We are just delighted. It seems to be very well made. Black and Decker have hit a home run with this one.

I was looking to replace a toaster oven which could handle the size of a casserole dish for baking and my daughter had just bought one of these so I got one too. This is wonderful. I bake my mac and cheese in it as it is too hot to turn on a full size oven in the summer. This toaster oven makes good toast and bagels, not too dry and not hard and crunchy like most toaster ovens. I use it every day for everything from toast to baking casseroles. Yes it gets hot on the outside, but almost all GOOD toaster ovens do. I had one that had the plastic on the sides that did not get hot but it was a crappy toaster oven. I really like the way it has a digital thermometer and seems to be more accurate than most toaster ovens.

3 out of 5 stars Black & Decker Digital Chip Not Perfected   July 5, 2010

I purchased the Black and Decker Digital Toaster/Convection Oven and have used Black and Decker Toaster/Ovens for many years and have been very satisfied with their products in the past. I use a toaster/oven on a daily basis to toast, bake, broil, etc. I was so excited to see a Digital Toaster/Convection Oven, but disappointed that it only lasted about a year and a half. I tried to bake a pizza one night and after the timer went off, it was as raw as when I put it into the oven; pizza function did not work. Tried other functions and had problems with them also, i.e., set the Bake function to 450 degrees and it would not reach that temperature; also had problems with the toasting. I think perhaps the Digital chip needs more work. Now I am back to researching which oven is the best for the money with the features I use, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A very well made and functioning device   June 18, 2010

I've been very pleased with my Black and Decker Toaster Oven - Starship! It has so many functions - I hardly use them all. It has been in use now for over a year and I use it approx 4 times a week. The timer and convection functions make this unit so complete at such a decent price point. There is nothing about this unit that has concerned me - I use it for english muffins (pizza muffins), frozen chicken and fish products, and refridgerated chicken. Now the only thing I have to say about my personal use is that I don't push it to the max. I don't have it going for hours a day. I basically use it max at about a half hour to 45 minutes a day, four times a week. Any long term cooking (like steaks, raw foods), I use my regular oven. It's just common sense to me. I don't tend to overuse anything. I instead, spread the jobs around - that way, I put even wear on everything and nothing is overused. So - I can't tell you that this unit will work flawlessly if you use it for so many hours a day / seven days a week. Hope this has been helpful.
