5 out of 5 stars Best Thermal Carafe Machine I've owned to date   March 8, 2010
Janet L. Wilson (Ramsey, NJ United States)
I'm a big fan of the thermal carafe. I don't like my coffee to be burned in a glass pot with heat under it. In the past, I've had other brands of thermal carafes. But, most make only up to 8 cups of coffee (which, in reality, is only about 3 mugs of coffee). When I bought this one about 2 years ago, I was looking for a larger carafe. When I originally found this one, I was skeptical of it because of the reviews. But, after looking at it in person, I thought I'd try it out. I have not regretted it once since then. This coffee pot makes the best, hottest coffee I've ever had from a drip coffee maker. And, as another person's review said, if it broke, I'd go right out and purchase another one. br / br /I was amazed at how much better my coffee tasted in this pot! My old coffee maker was not doing my coffee justice - and I didn't even know it until I made coffee in this one. That was an unexpected plus. br / br /As far as the overflow issues, I've had NONE. Not once has mine overflowed. And the entire pot, basket, etc. is all in good, working condition 2 years later. br / br /If I had to pick ONE issue, it'd be that if I don't drink all the coffee and forget that there's some in there (since you can't SEE it, it's easy to not realize there's more in there without picking up the carafe), the coffee will sometimes stick to the inside of the carafe. And the ONLY thing I can do to get it out is use bleach. I soak it in bleach for a little while, and then run it through the dishwasher and it is fine - just as shiny as it has always been. That's the only problem I've had with it. And I don't even consider it a "problem", per se. br / br /Just for the sake of argument, I make coffee every day - one pot every morning and more later in the day at times. I've used Mr. Coffee and other Cuisinart models in the past, among others.

3 out of 5 stars Make a good cup of coffee but....   February 22, 2010

We're very happy w/this coffee maker, but it doesn't compare w/our old loved but worn looking Krupps. Though this was the only 12 cup maker w/a thermos carafe we could find, there are a few downsides. The carafe is stainless so even though the coffee stays hot all day, by mid day it tastes of metal. Big bummer! The only other problem is that the filter doesn't fit very well - you kind of have to push it into place. In contrast to other reviews, we have had no problem w/the screw on top - pretty easy to master! Over all, not bad except for the metal tasting coffee!

3 out of 5 stars Poor design of the Pause Brewing and all plastic construction   February 21, 2010

I've had this coffee maker for over two years, I experienced three overflows and will list the reasons for each. br / br /First time, the basket was not fully clicked into place. My mother was staying over and make herself some coffee, hey! eighty years old, what can you say? br / br /Second time, when more than one person is in the house and using the coffee-maker its going to happen that the first person makes a pot, dumps the grounds and cleans the basket, only drinks half the pot. The second person then fills the water reservoir adds ground coffee and starts another pot, since the carafe is half full then half the new coffee overflows. br / br /Third time, the plastic hinge developed a crack, the basket can be snapped into place but slips off-center and doesn't fill the carafe, overflow results. br / br /First, design. I took five minutes and designed (on paper) a hinge that required you to lift the basket up slightly so that the basket would drop down into place and firmly in correct position or would fall back to the right and be obviously not positioned over the carafe. Cuisinart could and, in my opinion, should have done that. br / br /Second, there is no way short of lifting or opening the carafe to determine if it is empty. Even a half cup of coffee will result in a half cup of spill. The weight of the empty carafe is known, to place a sensor on the pad to detect even a grams difference would add about ten dollars to the final price of the unit. Ever cleaned up hot coffee and grounds from kitchen counter, drawers and floor? I'd pay it. br / br /Third, how long should a hundred dollar coffee-maker last? 1 year, 2 years, five? I don't know where the crack came from, the unit has never been dropped. The all plastic construction doesn't help and as reported by other users, all the lettering is being lost from normal cleaning with soap and water. (don't buy the black unit, its impossible to see dirt or deposits on or inside the unit) It should be noted that the unit is made in China. br / br /A few more points, the comments about overfilling the reservoir puzzles me. The reservoir on my unit has a hole drilled in the back, overfilling results in clean water being spilled out the back of the unit. Doesn't everyone's DTC-975 have that hole? br /The pause brew valve at the bottom of the grounds basket, this is the cause of all the overflowing issues. We don't use or need the feature, so we just removed the valve and the coffee-maker works fine without it. Now if the unit is not perfectly positioned over the carafe there is no overflow. It also allows us to continue to use the Cuisinart with the cracked hinge. br /As suggested by others, I heartily endorse the the regular cleaning with vinegar and water. br / br /My three star rating is mainly due to the poor durability and workmanship, A improved design would have resulted in a slightly higher price which is different kettle of fish, so I did not lower my rating on those issues. br / br /If I were rating the thermal carafe by itself, it would get five stars. br /

5 out of 5 stars Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Coffee maker   February 16, 2010

So far, my favorite thermal programmable coffer maker and I have had many. This is my second one. The big plus in this coffee maker is the thermal carafe. It is the only one that I have tried (I have owned at least ten) that will keep your coffee hot and fresh for an extended period of time. Besides that, it makes a good cup of coffee. This is the only model that has this particular design carafe. In my opinion, a big mistake. This unit comes in only a twelve cup version and is very tall. I had to remove the rubber pads on the bottom to fit under my cabinets. No big deal. The carafe has a pour through lid without having to unscrew it. When upright the lid seals. This in part is what helps in keeping your coffee hot and fresh. According to Cuisinart this is also the downside for some owners. The lid has a type of ball valve float which will gum up or stick after continued use without cleaning. This is the fault of the customers who feel it is too much trouble to run some white vinegar and water through their coffee maker or are ignorant and don't take the time to read the cleaning instructions. A big step up for this coffee maker would be for Cuisinart to redesign it to include a cleaning mode button with an alert when cleaning is necessary. It would also be nice to include a water filter and removable water reservoir. A ten cup model would also be appreciated, but keep the carafe design. It's winner.

5 out of 5 stars drip stainless coffeemaker   February 16, 2010

this coffeemaker is fantastic. It is easy to use and clean and keeps the brewed coffee warm for hours without a warmer. Also 12 cup capacity and durable stainless steel carafe.
