Got a VERY humid basement dry quickly; even building supervisor noticed August 30, 2010 Mickey789 (Collegeville, PA United States) We bought this to replace a smaller LG dehumidifier that worked fine in our old house, with a walk-out basement (and which didn't even require a sump pump, because of the location). Our new house had a damp basement, sump pump, and we were even beginning to see some mold on some woodwork. Our 45-pint LG just couldn't handle it. I did a lot of research, and narrowed the choices to the Soleus or Danby. I think the final decision came down to shipping. Anyway, this thing WORKS!!! When I plugged it in, our basement was at 85% - 90% humidity, and the Soleus had it down to 60% within about 2 weeks. It plateaued there for a while, because it's a new basement in an area with a high water table, and the new basement walls (cinder block) have moisture in them. Anyway, by now--about a month or so later--our humidity is down to 50%. I can't comment on the cycling issues others have had, because we leave it running 24/7 on the highest setting, just to dry out our basement. We lost our power the other day, and when the power came back on, the unit came back on at the same setting.
Our building supervisor stopped by for our 45-day walkthrough, and said that we had the driest new basement--lack of humidity or mildewy odor--that he had seen. He wanted to know what we were using so that he could recommend it to other homeowners who were having trouble getting their basements to dry out.
Just 1 con: We use this with a hose that goes into a drain, but somehow it drips enough to fill the bucket after about 2 to 3 weeks. I'm not going to take a star off for that, because it may be the washer in the piece of hose we're using. The filter is a good idea, but running 24/7 causes it to need cleaning (just rinse it off) about every 2 to 3 weeks, and the unit shuts off if the filter needs cleaning (you can always just press the "continue" button).
The noise doesn't seem bad. It makes a sort of loud fan noise, just a whoosh, but no machine noise. But we keep it in a basement that's only used for storage.
And if you run it 24/7 on high, it will increase your electricity bill. I can't tell how much lower ours would have been, because the A/C has also been on during the summer. But for the volume of air it moves, and how dry our basement is--90% to 50% in about a month and no more mold within a day or two!!!--it's worth it.

Work house August 23, 2010 jamblo I read the reviews of many dehumidifier before I purchased. Under advise to purchase as large a unit as you can afford because it would take less time and energy to removed the moisture from the air I purchased this unit and I may have purchased too large of a unit. This unit works very quickly in a 1200 square foot basement. It has a 2 hour and a 4 hour setting which is a very good feature. The unit will continue to run once the desired level of humidity has been reached so I use the timer settings. First time purchases of dehumidifier show be aware that all units are noisy and give off heat. I haven't had any experience with other dehumidifiers but I read online blogs and reviews before I purchased; which said this unit was not as loud as some of the other brands. The collection bin is sturdy and has a handle which helps when carrying a full bin of water.
Stoped working after one seasion - poor customer service response August 12, 2010 Eastnortheast (Illinois, USA) I have the Soleus DPI-50-03, which is identical to this model, though with a slightly lower daily capacity. I purchased it in early June 2009 for use in our basement. During the summer of 2009, it seemed to work properly. At the end of the summer, and with the drop in humidity, it was packed away in its original box/styrofoam until this (2010) summer. After taking it out and plugging it in, it did not work. The fan works, but the compressor does not, so no water is collected.
I contacted Soleus customer service and while they were very cordial, basically told me "sorry, nothing we can do. We recommend you take it to an A/C technician". Based on that response, I wrote a letter to the president of the company but never received a response.
So basically, I spent ~ $200 for a machine that worked about 3 months, and will probably need another $100 in repairs with no guarantee that it will ever work properly.
I would not recommend this company nor their products.
great product! August 12, 2010 kmc (Rutland, MA United States) Very happy with the soleus air 70 pint dehumidifier. It made quick work of the damp basement issue. The hose adapter works great with a standard garden hose to the sump pump outlet. It is simple to set up and get running, not sure about longevity yet as I've only had it for a month but it's been worth it's weight in gold so far!!
